Welcome to the Horizon Community Sabbath Blog!

Hello all!

As you know, we're going to practice Sabbath together as a community for the month of February. I'll be posting information periodically through the month and I need you all to help me have a conversation together on the blog. When you go to the blog, Please share your experiences, questions, and comments in the comment section below each post. I think this is a great opportunity for us to learn about the practice of Sabbath together as a community. I look forward to hearing from you (on the blog)!

Grace and Peace,
Greg

  1. Last Sunday after church, Elise, Zach and I took a family bike ride together on some trails in Lincoln. We only went 2.2 miles, but that was enough for Zachy who's just graduated from a tricycle to a bike with training wheels. It was a great time together with family and very relaxing! (maybe not too relaxing for zach who had a couple crashes, but he had fun! ;)

  2. Hey Greg. I'm interested in hearing from how people relate spiritually as families outside of church during the Sabbath. Let's start a conversation

  3. I am adding some family activities to our Sunday routine. I am going to make a nicer dinner that we will eat at the table together. Also I am planning to spend some of that time around the table talking about some of my beliefs and values I want to share with my kids. I get so busy I often share my expectations and beliefs with my sons as the situation arises. But I want to give them a mindful parenting message on Sunday. I am imagining kind of a topic a week. Maybe one week we talk about honesty and integrity but I also want to make sure my kids understand my expectations and perspective on things like relationships, drugs, work, compassion, etc.

  4. I'm very interested in this topic, although like many spiritual disciplines it seems out of my grasp. I like Susan's idea of a sit-down dinner, but my concern would be adding more work. It's interesting that Jesus performed his first miracle, turning water into wine, on the Sabbath. I guess I will work on a no stress or worry day. I'm not sure how, but I'll think about it. The kids would probably appreciate a no cell phone day.

  5. We generally keep the Sunday Sabbath afternoon for family time, calm, low to no work, decent but easy dinner. I like the idea of "no work," and possibly even preparation ahead of time to better achieve that in meal preparation, etc. That said, there is a form of "work" that for me can be interpreted differently. I was thinking earlier about how I am often happiest and best connected to God when I am dirty - outdoors dirty with earth that is! So Sunday we came home from church, changed clothes and went into the yard. Told A the 14 year old child we were spending time together outside; she could either pull weeds, rake leaves, or read on the swing. Need I state her choice? ;) I've been slowly trying to create a sanctuary, turning what was once a Bermuda grass plot into a budding little oasis. There are so far four different spots to read, think, pray, "Be in." But still a long way to go. At any rate, the roses required pruning, and pruning, as you biblical scholarly types (should ;) know, is godly "work." Putting hands into the earth, moving from one garden task to the next as plant or spirit calls, can be extremely meditative and provides ample opportunity for long conversations of prayer or not. When prompted to get music that we could share (instead of her ipod earbuds), she chose Kutless, fine w/ me. We were able to spend 2-3 hours outside, together but with space. Maybe not deeply spiritual for some of you, but remember, this is parenting a teen... Downside, later she had several mosquito bites and said, "I am never going outside again!" (This will not be true...) We were talking about the unseasonable weather bringing on the mosquitos and she exclaimed, "I HATE global warming!" I totally agree.
